Bow Hold for String Players with video #suzuki_school

The bow holds for violin, viola, cello, and double bass are tailored to the size and playing position of each instrument. Here’s a brief overview:

• Violin & Viola: The bow hold is quite similar for both instruments. The thumb is bent and placed on the frog (the end part of the bow where you hold it), and the other fingers are curved and placed at specific points on the stick. The pinky finger is curved and rests on the top of the stick to help control the bow.

• Cello: The cello bow hold is similar to the violin and viola but adjusted for the larger size of the bow and the different angle of playing. The thumb is placed opposite the second finger, and the fingers are more spread out along the stick. The hand is also more under the stick than with the violin and viola.

• Double Bass: The double bass bow hold is quite different due to the size and playing style of the instrument. There are two main types of bow holds for the double bass: the French bow hold and the German bow hold. The French bow hold is similar to that of the cello, with the thumb placed on the stick and the fingers spread out. The German bow hold, also known as the Butler grip, involves holding the bow like a stick, with the thumb placed on the side of the frog and the fingers wrapped around the stick.

What is the purpose of the Orchestra Conductor? What do their movements mean?

Conducting an orchestra involves a series of precise baton movements to communicate the tempo, dynamics, and expression of the music to the musicians. Here are some basic baton movements for different time signatures:

1. 4/4 Time Signature:

   • Downbeat (1): The baton moves straight down.
   • Second Beat (2): The baton moves to the left.
   • Third Beat (3): The baton moves to the right.
   • Fourth Beat (4): The baton moves up.

2. 3/4 Time Signature:

   • Downbeat (1): The baton moves straight down.
   • Second Beat (2): The baton moves to the right.
   • Third Beat (3): The baton moves up.

3. 2/4 Time Signature:

   • Downbeat (1): The baton moves straight down.
   • Second Beat (2): The baton moves up.

4. 6/8 Time Signature:

   • Downbeat (1): The baton moves straight down.
   • Second Beat (2): The baton moves to the left.
   • Third Beat (3): The baton moves to the right.
   • Fourth Beat (4): The baton moves up.

The first beat is always the baton (or hand) moving down from its highest position, known as the downbeat. The last beat in the bar is always up to the highest position, known as the upbeat. The beat before the upbeat is always a movement away from the conductor’s body¹².

'The way humans absorb music has changed so much since I was a shy seven year old going to my first piano lesson. But it isn't just music consumption that has change. The was we make music has become so much more digitised and reliant on software. But we should never lose site of the fact that traditional music and musical training is the back bone of successfully harnessing true talent. It is easy to fake talent, to disguise it behind AI or Google Apps, but the bottom line is, if you have no talent, you will struggle to make exciting music that give you and the audience true pleasure.

My new Suzuki.School aims to bring all the aspects of traditional music playing and modern techniques together.

We are not afraid of Technology or electronics but we start with the very basics and pay attention to the minutia of detail. That is what makes a great musician.

What makes ou Suzuki.School different is the wellness approach. I focus on breathing from lesson 1. Music needs to be fun, not stressful. We use VR to mimic an audience and learn to breathe throughout our performances which helps alleviate stage fright and post practice pain. You don't need to suffer quite as much for you art as many people suspect. You just need to find a zone that produces amazing results and comfort which we can all do.'

The new www.suzuki.school teaches a range of other methods too whilst still using the Suzuki method techniques of ear playing and repetition to get a great grounding.

iServalan and her electric Yamaha cello, her favourite instrument of choice for teaching at the Tale Teller Suzuki School

iServalan is a musician who teaches Suzuki cello. She has a show called “The iServalan Show” where she discusses various aspects of playing the cello. 

'As a record producer using software and many digital processes, I find the electric cello more conducive to my needs.

Specifically, micing up an acoustic instrument is difficult. Acoustics, background noise, and even my cat can ruin recordings. Plugging my Yamaha straight into my recording suite is perfect for speed and ease. I have learned to love the electric cello as a different beast to my acoustic. They have distinct personalities and idiosyncrasies. Plus I can play around with the MIDI recordings and have some fun with experimental processes (my favourite thing ever).

Of course, there is also the fact that my Yamaha has sex appeal and can play like a guitar, or in fact any other instrument using my many plugins.'

Yamaha offers a range of electric cellos, including the Yamaha SVC-110SK Silent Electric Cello. This model features a solid body design and provides a warm, natural sound. It’s ideal for players who want a classic cello sound but also have the option to plug in and amplify their performance.

Additionally, there’s the Yamaha SVC-210 Silent Electric Cello, which has different effects like direct, salon, concert hall, and church. It’s versatile and can be enjoyed with just headphones or connected to an auxiliary device for playing along with music from YouTube or other sources.
