A Surrealist Legacy: History and Founder

West Dean’s story is inseparable from its founder, Edward James (1907–1984). A poet, patron of the arts, and passionate supporter of Surrealism, James inherited the 6,350-acre West Dean Estate in 1932. He had close ties to artists including Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, and helped create iconic pieces such as the Mae West Lips Sofa and Lobster Telephone.

In 1939, concerned that traditional craftsmanship might vanish after the war, James wrote to Aldous Huxley about establishing a place to preserve and teach these skills. In 1964 he transferred the estate to the Edward James Foundation, a charitable trust. West Dean College opened in 1971 as a centre for conservation, visual arts, applied arts, crafts, writing, gardening, and music.

The historic West Dean House — a grand flint-and-stone mansion with Gothic and Edwardian elements — sits at the heart of the campus, surrounded by award-winning gardens. James is buried in the arboretum, his vision still shaping the college’s ethos today.
Two Campuses, Infinite Inspiration

West Dean Campus (West Sussex)

Set within the South Downs National Park, the rural campus offers specialist workshops, conservation science labs, fine art studios, a tapestry studio, furniture and clocks workshops, an arts and conservation library, and student accommodation. The Grade II* listed West Dean Gardens feature restored Victorian glasshouses, a 300-foot Edwardian pergola designed by Harold Peto, a walled kitchen garden, and surrealist touches that reflect James’s influence. The gardens are open to visitors and form an inspiring backdrop for study and creativity.

London Campus (Bloomsbury)

Opened more recently and home to the KLC School of Design (which merged with West Dean in 2021), the London base at Dilke House sits amid museums, galleries, and the West End. It offers a vibrant urban counterpart with facilities including a library, common room, and spaces for design courses, plus short courses from the Schools of Arts and Conservation.
World-Leading Schools and Courses

West Dean is organised into three main schools, validated in partnership with the University of Sussex for many degree programmes:School of Conservation
Specialising in the conservation of tangible cultural heritage, students gain extensive practical experience treating high-quality objects while building theoretical knowledge and following Icon Professional Standards. Pathways include books and library materials, ceramics, clocks, furniture, metalwork, and historic building conservation. Graduates work at institutions such as the British Museum, V&A, British Library, National Maritime Museum, and Historic England, as well as private practices worldwide.
School of Arts
Focused on materials, making, and place, this school offers everything from short courses and foundation diplomas (art & design, ceramics, printmaking, tapestry weaving, letter carving) to foundation degrees in historic craft practices (books & bindings, clocks, furniture, metalwork, musical instruments), graduate diplomas, BA (Hons) in Art and Contemporary Craft, MFA in Craft Practices, and MA Creative Writing & Publishing. Students benefit from dedicated studio space, residencies, visiting artists, and the annual Summer Show.

KLC School of Design

Based primarily in London, it delivers interior design and garden design qualifications ranging from certificates and diplomas to a BA (Hons) Interior Design. Courses combine practical projects, industry links, and professional accreditation pathways.

In addition, the college runs hundreds of short courses each year (in-person and online) for all levels, plus specialised programmes such as stringed instrument making and tapestry weaving — one of the few advanced tapestry studios in the world, known for major commissions including work for the Palace of Westminster and Historic Scotland.
